Advocate and Resource for Science and Science Education
The New Mexico Academy of Science is a professional organization open to any person interested in Science or Science Education in New Mexico. The mission of the New Mexico Academy of Science is to serve the state of New Mexico and its communities by publishing science and science education materials, giving recognition for contributions to science and science education, fostering scientific cooperation, raising public awareness of the importance of science and science education, and providing advice on matters related to science and science education.
The NMAS annual programs include: 1) a general meeting with a variety of events often including a distinguished keynote speaker, concurrent sessions, panels, posters, and competitions; 2) a teacher award program for Science Teachers in grades 6-12 who excel helping their students succeed; 3) a Junior Academy written paper competition held in conjunction with regional and state Science Fairs for students grades 6-12; 4) a lecture series which hosts expert speakers on topics of social, economic, and political interest in all science fields; and 5) sponsorship of the National Science Youth Camp for high school seniors.
NMAS gives a voice to science professionals, university professors, graduate students, science teachers and students in all grades. It provides professional input to state and local government entities including the NM Public Education Department.
